Fay says, "The Belmond Northern Belle roams the English, Scottish and Welsh countryside, with all the fine dining and superb service one would expect from a sister train to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express."

About the Northern Belle

A journey on the Belmond Northern Belle is more than just a day trip. Travel back to the 1930s as you travel through the British countryside. On the Northern Belle, dining is something to savour, providing the ultimate in stylish and enjoyable day excursions and short breaks from major stations throughout the UK, creating a special memory for a special occasion.

Go here for the list of Belmond Northern Belle Stations.

Lavishly furnished with specially commissioned fabrics, intricate marquetry and glistening brass, every exquisite detail sets the scene for your dalliance with the romance of travel, within carriages that create a country house atmosphere. Each carriage is named after a great British castle or stately home, so take time to admire the individual designs, lovingly restored by some of the country’s finest marquetry experts, muralists and mosaic artists.

Some History - The Orient Express

The first luxury train available to the general public is now generally known as the Orient Express. It is from the Orient Express that all the luxury trains that we enjoy today originate, such as the Belmond Northern Belle. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is the modern equivalent of the earlier Orient Express.

1867 – 1883 Chemins de fer Orientaux. The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire was a fervent believer in the railways. He was envious of the progress of train travel in Europe. He therefore engaged Baron Maurice de Hirsch of Chemins de fer Orientaux to link Constantinople (now Istanbul) to Europe by rail.

Each of the six Northern Belle carriages seat 42 and contain tables of two and four with plenty of room for guests to move around and enjoy the sociable atmosphere. The carriages are named after British castles or stately homes.

The fine meals on the Northern Belle are freshly prepared and complimented with champagne and wine, impeccably served. Menus feature the finest seasonal delicacies from the British Isles, coaxed into classic and innovative dishes by the team of chefs. Each dish is prepared using the finest ingredients from mainly UK suppliers and paired with the finest wines and indulgent extras. Tables are laid with glittering crystal and gleaming silver. Special diets are accommodated. Being associated with the Venice Simplon Orient-Express Christmas lunch is, for instance, very special.
