The Luxury Train Club is pleased to announce that the latest addition to Australia's luxury trains, Great Southern, will operate special departures between 6 December 2019 and 27 January 2020, linking Adelaide and Brisbane.

With a capacity of around 214 guests per departure, this marks a new chapter in Australian rail travel, embracing the wonders of Australia’s south-east corner.

The other luxury trains in the Journey Beyond stable are the Ghan, travelling north / south between Darwin and Adelaide, and the Indian Pacific, east-west between Sydney / Adelaide / Perth.

About accommodation on the Great Southern

Great Southern departures offer the choice of Platinum and Gold Service accommodation, inclusive of dining, on board beverages and off-train experiences.

Platinum

Great Southern Luxury Train News Platinum by day

Each Platinum cabin on the Great Southern has a double bed or twin beds, an en suite bathroom and full room service.

By day, the Platinum cabin is a private lounge with a moveable table, 2 ottomans and a writing desk next to the window. By night, the Platinum cabin converts to either a double or twin beds.

There are large panoramic windows and an additional interior window, allowing views on both sides of the train. The cabin is 3.65m x 2.1m, including en suite bathroom with complimentary toiletries.

Included in the Great Southern Platinum cabin fare : Cabin steward service; generous luggage limit (3 x 25kg); off-train excursions; all on-board meals including breakfast, lunch and dinner; breakfast served in cabin on request; turn-down service; wines, beers, spirits, cocktails, soft drinks, tea and coffee; chauffeur-driven transfers between hotel and station, either way (up to 50kms).

Gold Twin

By day, the Gold Twin Berth Sleeper Cabin on the Great Southern is a comfortable lounge, converting to an upper and lower sleeping berth at night.

Steward service includes fresh sheets, bath towels, pillows, duvet/quilt (doona) and complimentary toiletries.

Gold Twin Berth Sleeper Cabins have private en suite facilities with a hide-away compact toilet, wash basin and shower.

Gold Twin service includes: Restaurant Car dining, with freshly-prepared meals and waiter service; Lounge Car for relaxation and refreshments; in-cabin music and detailed journey commentary available from the cabin sound system; complimentary tea and coffee.

Gold Single

Single Berth Sleeper Cabins on the Great Southern feature a comfortable lounge chair and foot rest by day and a single level sleeping berth by night.

Cabins are fitted with a wash basin. Showers and toilets are located at either end of the Gold Service carriage.

Gold Single service includes: Restaurant Car dining, with freshly-prepared meals and waiter service; Lounge Car for relaxation and refreshments; in-cabin music and detailed journey commentary available from the cabin sound system; complimentary tea and coffee.

Brisbane to Adelaide - 3 nights, 4 days

Departing Mondays, the Brisbane-Adelaide journey features a beach-side dining experience on the Northern New South Wales Coast, as well as visits to the stunning Hunter Valley wine region and at the incredible Twelve Apostles.

Day 1 - Brisbane and Northern New South Wales Coast

As the sun dips into the horizon, dine to the sounds of the waves on the New South Wales coast. This comprises 90kms of sandy beaches and some of the best surfing in the world. (L,D)

Day 2 - Hunter Valley and surrounds

The train takes one past the Semillon and Shiraz areas with time to meander through the Hunter Valley vineyards. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Regional Victoria and the Twelve Apostles

Embrace the pastoral perfection of regional Victoria and its paddock-to-plate dining ethos. Ascend the dramatic cliff faces along which the famous Great Ocean Road passes and marvel at the Twelve Apostles – a majestic collection of crumbling pillars rising from the Southern Ocean. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Adelaide

This morning, you are greeted by the beautiful green fields and pastoral lands of South Australia. After breakfast, the Great Southern rolls into Adelaide. Here, you may wish to extend your stay, with trips to the Barossa Valley or Kangaroo Island topping the to-do list. (B)

Adelaide to Brisbane - 2 nights, 3 days

Departing Fridays, the Adelaide-Brisbane journey includes touring in The Grampians, Canberra and a special beach-side dining experience on the Northern New South Wales Coast.

Day 1 - The Grampians

Explore one of Australia’s most stunning wilderness regions, boasting sandstone mountains, wildflowers, waterfalls and native fauna such as echidnas and wallabies. (L,D)

Day 2 - Canberra

While the jewel in Canberra’s crown is Parliament House, it is also home to landmarks such as the National Portrait Gallery, Australian War Memorial and the National Arboretum. There are plenty of opportunities to delve into this city’s art, history and culinary culture. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Northern New South Wales Coast and Brisbane

General Information about the Great Southern

*Advance Purchase fares must be booked a minimum of 6 months in advance and are subject to availability.

Luggage. Due to cabin space constraints, it is recommended guests take an 'overnight bag' containing all requirements for their journey with them in their cabin and check-in all other luggage. Each guest is permitted to check-in a maximum 40kg luggage free of charge* (2 items not exceeding 20kg each). Note: Checked-in luggage cannot be accessed during the journey. Additional luggage may be checked in as excess luggage at a cost of $50.00 per item, payable direct to the train. *Platinum allowance is 3 bags each of 25kgs.

Included. The complimentary inclusions are noted after each description of the cabin.

Travel Documents. Travel documents are sent by email which outline when and where to board as well as luggage arrangements. The document is an itinerary which represents the tickets for the train and any other arrangements. A pre-departure email is issued 7 days prior to travel that contains practical information for the upcoming journey. All times are local time and may be subject to change. Guests must be at the terminal at least one hour before train departs.

Gold Service Guests: Complimentary coach transfers to Darwin Rail Terminal are available for Gold Service guests departing from selected Darwin hotels.Central hotel drop off is the Mantra on the esplanade. Please ask.

Excursions. Off Train excursions are booked by the guests on board. These excursions cannot be pre-booked. TBA is added to the ticket vouchers as this lets the train staff know to ask for the guests choice.

Dress Code. The dress code on board is a smart casual dress.
