A New Age of Rail Travel

This is the new age of rail, which has many benefits for travellers, for communities, for the environment and our wider society.

Investment is flowing into the railways worldwide and global concerns about the environment are maturing into positive action. The result is that the number of travellers is growing. At the same time spending on luxury travel is gradually increasing, year on year.

Luxury trains are about a relaxed and gentle voyage and not headlong rushes along high-speed rail lines, or crowded ‘buses on rail’.  The trains frequently travel through spectacular or scenic countryside, mountains, savannah, tundra and deserts or along coasts, riverbanks and lake shores, often opening up vistas that are not visible from roads.

Most train fares include programmes of excursions and visits to cities, sights and natural wonders along the route.

The standard of cuisine is as least as high as one would expect from a quality restaurant, and is complemented by an extensive bar and wine list, served by uniformed stewards, expert at being attentive without over-familiarity.

Cabins on the trains that offer overnight accommodation are of a high standard, carefully designed living areas make the most of available space, and almost all such trains have en suite, attached private bathrooms.  There are dedicated cabin staff / butlers, fresh linen, toiletries and a turn-down service.

All luxury trains make the most of their lounges and bar cars as convivial, sociable venues – but also frequently provide space or dedicated carriages for those passengers would prefer a little peace and quiet.

Most luxury trains continue to have a low profile with their prospective markets. Train owners do not always have the resources to reach a global marketplace nor do they benefit from marketing relationships similar to those enjoyed by others in the luxury travel sector, such as small boutique hotels.

Every successful category of commerce – shoes, cars, hotels, phones – has a premium product or sector, the strength of which helps others in the same industry; the relationship between luxury trains and other train services is no different.
